Last Thursday, I was watching brightly attired brothers and sisters stretch, dance, and socialize to the beat of Ke$ha and Lil’ Wayne. High school dance recital? Glorified circus? No! It was Bentley’s Best Dance Crew competition held in the EDR on March 18.

The event, sponsored by BSTV and Alpha Phi, showcased seven student dance crews battling for the title of Bentley’s Best Dance Crew (and you thought we only had two dance teams at this school). The proceeds from the event went to Project Haiti (the Haiti relief effort on campus) and Alpha Phi’s charitable foundation.

And what would an EDR event be without food and various raffles? Prizes to be won were Dunkin Donuts gift cards, an Edible Arrangement, a mini grill tailgate bundle, and even a Flip camera. All teams were competing for a $100 grand prize and bragging rights.

The boys of DKE and Alpha Phi sisters were very well represented, with two teams from each organization. There was an ASP duo dressed in the worst of the 80s garb, CRAZE, Bentley’s hip-hop dance team, and last but not least, BSTV’s own dance crew.

Alpha Phi teams, very pretty in matching pink outfits for their Barbie Girl routine, made heads turn and audience members fall off their chairs in surprise!

The first DKE team gave a good performance, but simply paled in comparison to their older brothers. DKE’s Sam Mayville and company were like fish out of water on stage – in a good way. Their utilization of old school classics such as Kung Fu Fighting and YMCA made for interesting dance moves.

BSTV’s team closed the show, but not before “making some love” onstage to an Usher classic.

The coordinated and quick moving CRAZE dance team gave a perfect performance of their latest routine, which included songs by Ludacris and Beyonce. Even their hair flipping was in sync! But all teams were utterly outdone by the ASP duo, Josh Stavis and Scott Scarpato, who unabashedly shook and sweated to the oldies. In a performance that would have brought a tear to Richard Simmons’ eye, the boys rocked out, high-kicked, and danced their pants off to win the title of Bentley’s Best Dance Crew.

BSTV’s Nick Aquino was glad the event was so successful, saying, “I had a lot of fun and the crowd was really enthusiastic. Definitely watch out for next year’s competition.” Hear that, crews? Keep practicing!
