Senior Ale Kuncaitis hit .351 with a match-high 15 kills, and sophomore Elyse Lorenz recorded 42 assists and three aces, as Merrimack College swept past preseason conference favorite Bentley University, 3-0, in Northeast-10 Conference women’s volleyball Tuesday night.
The loss was just the third in the last 49 regular season conference matches for Bentley, dating back to the start of the 2005 season, and knocked the Falcons (12-7, 6-1 NE-10) from the top of the Northeast-10 standings. Merrimack, which had bounced Bentley from last year’s NE-10 playoffs, remained unbeaten in the conference (5-0) and improved to 10-7 overall.
The night started out in a positive way for the Falcons, the first three points going up on the Bentley side of the scoreboard. Merrimack more than answered, scoring the next eight, and went on to an easy 25-15 set one victory.
The next two sets were closer, but Merrimack pulled out victories in both, 25-20 and 25-23. The second saw the Warriors finish with a 5-1 spurt after Bentley closed to within one at 20-19. The finale was tied at 22-all, but two late kills by Kuncaitis enabled the Warriors to close out the match.
Junior Kristine Mickelson led the Falcons with 11 kills, six blocks, a .348 hitting percentage and the team’s only service ace. Freshman Virginia Wong made eight kills, junior Cassie Kraft had a team-best 22 digs, and junior Tori Piskulick set 19 assists.
Kuncaitis, one of three Warriors who had double-figure kills, completed her double-double with 16 digs. Sophomore Molly Cindric added 11 kills and junior Lisa Barr put down 10.
