The Bad Boys of Rock are back. What do you do when you’ve lived Nine Lives? You Just Push Play. Aerosmith’s latest album, which hit stores on March 6th in the middle of the recent blizzard, is their best album to date. Every song on the album is great by itself, but also flows well with the others to create almost an hour’s worth of pure listening enjoyment.
The CD begins with a dial tone and ends with a whisper, but everything in between is pure rock and roll. The album is pure energy with songs like “Just Push Play,” “Trip Hoppin’,” and “Outta Your Head” making it almost impossible to keep from at least tapping your foot. The band does slow it down a little with “Fly Away From Here” and “Avant Garden,” but you can still feel the passion behind the music. The unique thing about this album is that you can picture Aerosmith doing each of these songs in concert and having a blast doing it, compared to the three or four songs with other CDs.
Each song on the album has its own unique flavor. They all have a fresh quality to them, like nothing you have heard before, but each song is still distinctly Aerosmith. The great guitar riffs are still there, along with the distinctive voice of front man Steven Tyler, but there are also some new little tricks. Sound distortion along with the addition of strings, horns and other instruments not generally associated with a rock and roll band help to add a little spice to some of the songs. Guitarist Joe Perry also added another twist by taking the microphone from Tyler to provide the lead vocals for “Drop Dead Gorgeous.”
The excitement that you can feel with every song could be due to the changes Aerosmith made in the way it produced this album. Tyler and Perry decided to take more control over their music this time around by co-producing with Mark Hudson and Marti Frederiksen. The guys also opted against traveling to some far off city to pay for an expensive studio. Instead, they crashed at Perry’s studio, known as the Boneyard, in the basement of his home.
Everyone is sure to love at least one song off this album, whether it be the first single released, “Jaded,” or one of the other eleven tracks. If you do not have the album already, I highly recommend going out to get it. Bring it back to your house, put it in the CD player, and Just Push Play.
