Junior Joe Covino led an assault on the Bentley College outdoor track record book while helping the Falcons easily win the ten-team Tri-States Invitational at Bryant College.

Covino broke school records in both the 100 meters and the 200 meters, finishing second in each. His time of 11.05 seconds in the 100 bettered the record set by Darrell Crosby-Williams in 1993 by four-hundredths of a second. In the 200, he ran a 22.13 to strike Russ Scarlata’s 18-year-old mark from the Bentley records.

Covino also won the long jump with a distance of 20’10.5” and anchored Bentley’s winning 4×100 relay team, that posted a time of 43.36 seconds. The first three legs were run by freshmen Peter Bonneau, John Amara and Paul Ferrini.

Freshman Chris O’Neil took the school record in the shot put away from teammate Joe Ferrara. They finished 1-2 with both surpassing the previous standard of 45’3.5”. O’Neil threw it 46’6.75” while Ferrara posted a career best 45’9.25”.

O’Neill also finished third in both the high jump (5’6”) and the discus (109’3”) while Ferrara was third in the hammer (109’9”).

A trio of Bentley juniors went 1-2-3 in the 5,000 meters, with Mike Merrill winning in 15:41.26. Gary Mello was second, 13 seconds back, and Rob Perkins was third in 16:12.36.

The other winners for Bentley were Mello in the 1500 (4:06.99), senior Adam Manoli in the 400 (50.25), freshman Bill Crawford in the 400 hurdles (56.73) and freshman Brian Simon in the pole vault (10’0”).

Second place finishes were recorded by Amara in the 400 (50.56), freshman Rory Igo in the 800 (1:57.83), sophomore Dan Yifru in the 1500 (4:07.04), freshman Jim Kastrenos in the high jump (5’8”) and freshman Matt Feury in the javelin (161’1”).
